The Water Fund is an independent and financially sustainable mechanism that seeks to guarantee the adequate use of water resources, as well as the conservation and reduction of threats to the biodiversity in the Motagua – Polochic System.  The income from the Water Fund is used to promote effective management in the protected area, conduct integrated watershed management, promote better production practices amongst local stakeholders, create environmental awareness amongst key groups, conduct scientific research for conservation and to design and implement local and regional policies related to water resources. The final goal of these actions is to contribute to the conservation of resources and forest ecosystems in the core of the Sierra de las Minas, as well as to promote socio-economic wellbeing in local communities.
